The literature describes the difficulty in differentiating the self from the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. However, there is less research that contributes to the understanding of how this diffuse differentiation between the self and the diagnosis is consolidated in the narrative of these people. This research aims to interpret the narratives that account for the process of differentiation between the self and the diagnosis in the biography of adults with bipolar disorder in the region of La Araucanía. The qualitative-interpretive methodology focuses on Rosenthal's (2018) biographical narrative approach, with a descriptive design. The theoretical sample consists of 8 participants, selected through theoretical sampling. The biographical narrative interview is used as a data collection technique. The results show in the biographies reviewed that the narratives of the self are dynamic in the course of vital development, and the diagnosis may or may not be coupled as a central element in the identity, in a continuous process, in which there may be different variables, related both to individual, family and social factors. A tendency to resist the stigma linked to the bipolar narrative is interpreted from the resignification and validation of self-narratives that can be constituted as identity elements, which can facilitate a differentiated diagnostic integration of the self. Finally, identification arises when the organization that provides the diagnosis seems to gain more explanatory weight from the previous experiences in the biographies of those who present a less enriched vision of the self.
